Bupropion

Originally marketed as an antidepressant, Bupropion known as Wellbutrin®, the medicine has mild stimulant effects by blocking of the reuptake of catecholamines, especially norepinephrine and dopamine. A serendipitous observation among depressed patients was the effectiveness of the medicine in suppressing tobacco cravings by promoting cessation without concurrent weight gain. Although the exact mechanisms of action in facilitating smoking cessation are unclear, the Federal Drug Administration approves bupropion as a smoking cessation treatment.
