Prescription Drug Addiction

The use of nonmedical prescription drugs increased dramatically in the 1990s, and remains at a high level. In 2007, approximately 7 million people aged 12 or older reported nonmedical use of a prescription drug. The most commonly abused medications are painkillers or opioids, with 5.2 million users. 1.2 million people use stimulants like methylphenidate and amphetamine. There are over 2 million users of central nervous system depressants like benzodiazepines. Like many illicit substances, these drugs alter the activity of the brain and can cause many adverse consequences, including addiction. For example, opioid pain relievers like Vicodin or OxyContin can cause health risks similar to opioids like heroin. The effects of these drugs depend on dose, route of administration and combination with other drugs. Because of increased use of nonmedical drugs, more people visit the emergency room at hospitals for accidental poisonings and treatment addictions. Treatments for prescription drugs tend to be similar to those for illicit drugs that affect the same brain systems. Thus, doctors prescribe buprenorphine to treat addiction to opioid pain medications. Behavioral therapies help addicts cope with stimulant, but there are no medicinal treatments for central nervous system depressant addictions.

Individualized Dependency Treatment

An effective individualized treatment approach provides the patient with multiple individual sessions each week, in addition to the group therapies, community meetings and sober recreational activities. This intensive, individualized treatment balances therapeutic experiences and provides a format for developing the cognitive understanding, emotional stability and constructive behavioral habits that are essential to an enduring recovery. Experts strive for a comprehensive understanding of each patient within the context of the family unit. The multifaceted treatment team employs a philosophy of holistic healing, with attention to the mind, body and spirit of each patient. It is essential to treat the whole person who is afflicted with addiction. It necessary to address the physical, mental and spiritual needs of the patient. An individualized treatment plan designed and implemented by the clinical team addresses the many facets and root causes of addiction. The treatment team meets on a regular basis, both formally and informally, to ensure the continuity of care provided during treatment. The treatment teams design aftercare plans for the patient upon discharge. In an effort to eliminate the presence of self-destructive and maladaptive behaviors, experts address the sources of addiction, even though causes are often difficult to determine. Drug rehabilitation has a goal of finding the root causes of the problem and aiding the patient in resolving these issues. Treatment of substance abuse is an ongoing process that does not end upon discharge from residential treatment. The rehab center aims to provide the patient with the coping skills and aftercare resources that will support sobriety and prevent relapse. The family is an integral component of the treatment process and ultimate recovery. The treatment center seeks to include and educate the family in the ways in which they can support and facilitate the recovery process.

Malibu Colony was one of the first areas inhabited after Malibu was opened to the public in 1929 and it is one of Malibu's most famous districts. It is located along Malibu Road, westward of the Pacific Coast Highway, on the opposite shore of the Malibu Lagoon State Beach and adjacent to the Malibu Bluffs Park former state park. Initially May Rindge kept control of Malibu Beach, allowing a few wealthy Hollywood stars to build vacation homes. Nearly a decade later, money woes forced Rindge to sell the land, and the Colony was born. Long known as a popular private enclave for wealthy celebrities, the Malibu Colony today is a gated community, with multi-million dollar homes on small lots. Encourage Healthy Eating Habits

Buy and serve more fruits and vegetables fresh, frozen, canned or dried. Let the child choose them at the store. Buy fewer soft drinks and high fat or high calorie snack foods like chips, cookies and candy. These snacks may be okay occasionally, but always keep healthy snack foods on hand. Offer the healthy snacks more often at snack times. Make sure the child eats breakfast every day. Breakfast may provide the child with the energy he or she needs to listen and learn in school. Skipping breakfast can leave a child hungry, tired and looking for less healthy foods later in the day. Eat fast food less often. When visiting a fast food restaurant, encourage healthier options choices, such as salads with low-fat dressing or small sandwiches without cheese or mayonnaise. Offer a child water or low fat milk more often than fruit juice. Low fat milk and milk products are important for development of any child. One hundred percent fruit juice is a healthy choice but is high in calories. Limit the amount of saturated and trans fats in the family diet. Instead, most fat intake should come from sources such as fish, vegetable oils, nuts and seeds. Plan healthy meals and eat together as a family. Eating together at meal times helps children learn to enjoy a variety of foods. Do not get discouraged if a child will not eat a new food the first time. Some kids will need to have a new food served to them 10 times or more before they will eat it. Try not to use food as a reward when encouraging kids to eat. Promising dessert to a child for eating vegetables, for example, sends the message that vegetables are less valuable than dessert. Kids learn to dislike foods they think are less valuable.
