Methadone and Buprenorphine

Buprenorphine and methadone are not heroin/opioid substitutes. Doctors prescribed or administered these drugs under monitored, controlled conditions and are safe and effective for treating opioid addiction when used as directed. Doctors administer drugs orally or under the tongue in specified doses and pharmacological effects differ from those of heroin and other abused opioids. Users of heroin, for example, often inject, snort or smoke the drug, causing an almost immediate "rush," or brief period of euphoria, that wears off quickly and ends in a "crash." The individual then experiences an intense craving to use again in order to stop the crash and reinstate the euphoria. The cycle of euphoria, crash and craving sometimes occurs several times a day. The cycle is a hallmark of addiction and results in severe behavioral disruption. These characteristics result from the rapid onset of the effects of heroin and the short duration of action in the brain. As used in maintenance treatment, methadone and buprenorphine are not heroin or opioid substitutes. In contrast, methadone and buprenorphine have gradual onsets of action and produce stable levels of the drug in the brain. As a result, patients maintained on these medications do not experience a rush, while also markedly reducing desire to use opioids. When patient is on methadone or buprenorphine for treatment takes heroin, patient does not feel the full euphoric effects of the heroin. The methadone or buprenorphine dampen and suppress the effects of the heroin. Patients undergoing maintenance treatment do not experience the physiological or behavioral abnormalities from rapid fluctuations in drug levels associated with heroin use. Maintenance treatments save lives. Medicinal treatment helps stabilize individuals, allowing doctors to treat other medical and psychological problems a patient may have in order to reintegrate the patient into society.

How to Smoke Marijuana

People primarily smoke marijuana, but the methods people use for smoking can vary from user to user. The three most popular techniques for smoking marijuana are joints, pipes and bongs. In all three methods, the user holds the smoke in the lungs for a brief moment before exhaling. People make joints by filling rolling papers with marijuana, and roll it into a cylindrical shape, which resembles a cigarette. Rolling joints require some degree of technique and dexterity, sufficiently mastered with practice. The remaining end of the smoked joint is a "roach" and is difficult to smoke, requiring a "roach clip" to avoid burning the fingers. Head shops and convenience stores carry rolling papers.

Pipes

Pipes contain a bowl or receptacle and a stem with a mouthpiece at its end.
Pipes can be more convenient than joints because there is no labor in rolling and pipes are durable, often small and easily transportable. Users fill the bowl with marijuana and then light it. Smoke travels through the stem to the lungs. Pipes are made from a variety of materials, including metal, ceramic or wood and are readily available online, at a local head shop and or may be homemade.

Water Pipes and Bongs

Another method for smoking marijuana is the water pipe, also known as a bong. A bong consists of an airtight cylinder, containing a stem on the side, which holds a bowl at its base. The user fills the bottom of the cylinder with water so that it meets the bottom of the stem. Smokers put marijuana into the bowl and inhale from the opening at the top of the cylinder while lighting the bowl. When inhaling, water forces air beneath the water level to produce a bubbling effect. This traps some heavier particles and water-soluble molecules. When enough smoke builds up, the user either releases the stem or opens the carburetor on the side, forcing the remaining smoke into the lungs. Bongs come in ceramic or glass and are widely available online or at a local head shop.
